Discover the fascinating world of stinging nettles with biologist and nature guide Caroline at Mittlandsgården. Learn about the plant’s history, medicinal uses, and surprising benefits during a 1.5-hour guided walk.
Stinging nettles often bring to mind soup or itchy encounters, but there's much more to this versatile plant. Join biologist and nature guide Caroline as she unveils the myths, facts, and folklore surrounding one of the most loved and hated plants in Swedish culture.
Did you know that nettles were once believed to cure everything from baldness and bad breath to mental health issues? They’ve been used in cooking, fiber production, plant dyeing, and even as a natural source of warmth. In traditional medicine, nettles were seen as a universal remedy, said to help with everything from low spirits to unwanted pregnancies. While some view nettles as an annoying weed, others see them as a powerful medicinal plant.
During this 1.5-hour tour, you'll hear both scientific facts and folklore about nettles, discovering their magical powers and many uses.
The tour begins at Mittlandsgården, located at Törnbottenvägen 68, just outside Algutsrum. From there, the group will travel together to the nearby forest. Participants are advised to bring gloves and containers for picking nettles. Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes, as the ground is mostly flat but uneven in places. Due to the terrain, the activity is not suitable for strollers or walkers. Pets are not allowed on the tour.
The tour is guided both in english and swedish.
