Discover Sweden’s first interactive exhibition about the history of books and writing. Located in the historic Old Library in Skara, The Book Adventure invites families to explore storytelling and reading through playful and educational stations that span from ancient runestones to modern children’s literature.
In the heart of Skara, inside the historic Old Library from 1859, The Book Adventure offers an engaging journey through the history of books and writing. The exhibition is designed for children and adults to explore together in an environment that encourages play, discovery, and curiosity.
Visitors can travel through time as they explore themed stations that illustrate the evolution of writing—from oral traditions and Viking runestones to the invention of the printing press and today’s digital reading. The exhibition features small miniature houses and you can play shopkeeper in our hot dog stand, dress up as animals and kings, ride a slide through a book, step into a tree or maybe try out what it was like to go to school in the past.
A key feature of the exhibition is the Skara Missal, Sweden’s oldest book dating from the 12th century, on display in a special showcase. Temporary events such as storytelling and children’s theatre performances offer something new with each visit.
