Hiking on Kinnekulle – Grand Canyon, Munkängarna (monk meadows), and Ancient Forests.
Discover the dramatic landscapes and enchanting nature of Kinnekulle on a guided hike with Annica Ehrman from Kinnekulle Tourism. We begin at Hellekis Manor and make our way to the large quarry, often referred to as Kinnekulle’s “Grand Canyon.” Limestone was extracted here between 1892 and 1979, mainly for cement production.
From there, we descend into the majestic deciduous forest and stroll through the beautiful monk meadows before passing the mysterious Mörkeklev Cave. The trail continues past the site of the old tourist hotel—today, only a three-ash tree remains. One of its guests was Selma Lagerlöf, who visited while completing her book Jerusalem.
We also pass the historic Råbäck estate before returning to Hellekis Manor. The hike is approximately 4–5 km in total, making it perfect for both nature lovers and history enthusiasts. Along the way, we’ll also enjoy a small local tasting.
It is recommended that you are reasonably fit to walk 5 km unassisted. Wear good walking shoes and bring a water bottle, along with clothing suitable for the weather. The terrain varies, with some parts on trails and one uphill section. The hike lasts approximately 2,5 hours.
